Best Adaptogens

Best Adaptogens

Adaptogens are fairly new in the world of natural supplements. They are growing rapidly in popularity due to their effectiveness, but it is still common for many people to hear the word “adaptogen” and think, “what-ogen?”

What are Adaptogens?

We’re glad you asked.
Adaptogens get their name from their unique ability to help the human body adapt to the physical and mental stresses we encounter on a daily basis. They are plant-sourced substances that give the body a boost where it is needed most.

How do Adaptogens work?

Adaptogens work by “stepping in” where your body’s organs and systems have gotten “out of whack”. They restore something known as “homeostasis”. Homeostasis is a word used to describe a state of perfect balance.
Homeostasis is the natural state of the human body, but there are many things that can cause things to be thrown out of kilter. Poor diet, exposure to chemicals in our food and body products, and even illness and injury all share a role in creating imbalances. Imbalances lead to stress.
Adaptogens are designed (by nature) to isolate areas of internal stress and get to work.
I’m sure you’re wondering, “If adaptogens are so great, why is this the first I’m hearing of them?”
It’s a good question. The truth is that adaptogens are a relatively new discovery and their attributes are only now being discovered in the Western world. Luckily we have discovered them their top-performing varieties:

What Are the Best Adaptogens?

1. Golden Root (Rhodiola Rosea)

Golden root (also known as arctic root) grows naturally in the alpine regions of Europe and Asia. As the name suggests, the root of the plant is medicinal and has been used by the people of those regions for centuries, primarily to treat stress and fatigue.
Different adaptogens “specialize” in different functions and systems in the body. Golden root helps cells produce energy and even helps with brain function. Not bad for a root pulled out of the ground!

2. Maral Root (Leuzia Carthamoides)

Another root from Asia, maral root has been used in alternative medicine for quite some time but only recently has been identified as an adaptogen.
Like golden root, maral root has specific uses. It has been shown to help with muscle strength and recovery. Due to this, it is especially popular with athletes looking for natural support.

3. Siberian Ginseng (Eleutherococcus Senticocus)

As the name indicates, Siberian ginseng is a plant found growing in Siberia. Contrary to its name, however, it is not actually a member of the ginseng family. However, it shares many of the same properties as traditional ginseng.
Siberian ginseng is good for the heart and blood vessels. It also naturally supports sleep without making the patient drowsy. In addition to these great benefits, Siberian ginseng also provides a boost the immune system.

4. Limonnik (Schizandra Chinensis)

The last of our fabulous four is called Limonnik and is grown in Russia and China. Unlike the other three on our list, this adaptogen comes not from the roots of a plant but from its berries. Limonnik has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries.
Limonnik benefits a system we haven’t talked much about yet: the nervous system. Specifically, limonnik supports your spinal reflexes. These are the reflexes at play when the doctor hits your knee with his little triangular mallet, or when you duck from something heading at your face before you even really register it’s there. They are the reflexes beneath conscious action, and we need them to stay alive and to respond to our environment.
